mobile website redesign

In the summer of 2023, in my MS HCI program at DePaul University, I took a course entitled “Information Architecture and Content Strategy”, with Professor Danyell Jones. For this class I, chose to redesign “Buttered by Bri”, a online Black owned skincare company, that sells all natural body products for men and women. The owner, Brianna Spears, started her business in February 2021, to help individuals with skin sensitivities and allergies, as she struggled with severe eczema and psoriasis as a child. Though buttered by bri.com has wonderful products, the site's main navigation is lacking second and third level navigation menus. Secondly, categories within the main navigation are quite repetitive in nature. Lastly there is no customer portal navigation for consumers to view there account information. (More on this in my Content Inventory).

what I learned...

Over all three main lessons I learned is that, first, clear verbiage for labels is crazily important, secondly, I gathered that what works for bigger companies, design wise, does not work for small, and lastly I learned that the process of getting bad results is actually pretty fun.

Verbiage issues arose in my tree testing and card sorting rounds, I had no idea that over use of transitions in questions, or nuances between phases such as "About vs Profile" could profoundly confuse participants. Following I researched bigger companies such as Fenty Beauty, Five and Below, Sephora, and etc. for inspiration. I ended up gathering that certain design elements on bigger sites, just ultimately don't make sense to users on smaller sites. Finally, though initially dismayed by failed rounds of testing, I found these experiences very valuable and actually fun to solve. I feel that I have definitely grown as a researcher and will hold theses lessons dear, as my career evolves.
