EXECUTIVE SUMMARY…

We explore common approaches a pet owner would take in case they lose a pet, to understand user scenarios and establish areas of improvement for technology-based solutions.

We interviewed eight adults and gathered insights as to how they would find ways to help and actively engage in case of losing a pet. The interviews were conducted in-person and online, starting with warm-up questions about their experiences of owning a pet. We organized our data using an affinity diagram and categorized it into themes based on technology use, subjective experiences, and community engagement.

The findings revealed various approaches the participants would take including contacting nearby animal shelters, tracking the pet using chip information inserted in the pet, searching the neighborhood, engaging friends, and community, posting on social media, and posting posters in efforts to recovering the lost pet. The participants also highlighted the emotional turbulence that pet owners would go through during these scenarios.

The study concludes the measures pet owners adapt when looking for a lost pet. The insights included:

·      Preventative measures

·      Immediate Actions

·      Community Engagement

·      Technological Solutions

·      Effective Communication

By facilitating these insights into technology-based solutions, the pet recovery process can become effective for the pet owners during these stressful situations. Overall, a strategic approach that addresses helpful resources and immediate solutions is essential for pet recovery processes.
